Quinn Now Says Income Tax Hike Could Save State Police Layoffs
Gov. Pat Quinn says the state trooper layoff plan might be averted, if state lawmakers approve his income tax plan.

If that sounds familiar, it's because Quinn said the same thing about teacher layoffs. Quinn announced that about 17,000 teachers and school staff would have to be let go because of the massive budget hole. Last week, Illinois State Police acting director Jonathon Monken announced that he would layoff 464 officers, and this week, Monken said he would have to close five ISP district offices.

During a news conference at the Capitol, Quinn didn't fully connect the tax hike proposal to ISP jobs, but did say that that increasing the state income tax rate from 3 percent to 4 percent "would help" with many problems. His tax hike is supposed to raise $2.8 billion, with about half slated to keep teachers on the job.
