Monken: ISP Budget Cuts No Publicity Stunt
The number of calls coming in from local police has increased, yet Illinois State Police will soon have fewer troopers to handle the additional work. That's according to State Police acting director Jonathon Monken.

The State Police plan to cut more than 450 troopers and vacate five district headquarters because of the budget crisis. Monken says those moves will save the agency $32 million next fiscal year, but points out that state police have been absorbing budget cuts for five to six years. He says while most people haven't noticed the cuts, the situation is dire enough that people will notice the upcoming obvious cuts.

Monken says the "tragic irony" is that local police agencies have had to start laying off people and make other cuts, meaning those agencies have started to rely more heavily on the State Police.
