U of I Extension Mulls Closures to Save Money
URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- The University of Illinois' Extension Service says it may close some of its offices around the state to deal with a potential $5.59 million state budget cut.

Extension spokesman Gary Beaumont says it's likely the service's 12 centers around the state would close. Their operations could be run out of county offices or even from employees' homes.

Beaumont says the service is trying to find ways to save money without cutting programs.

The university announced a financial review of extension operations this week. The U of I is reviewing a number of departments as it looks for ways to deal with cuts in state support.

Extension spends about $85 million in local, state and federal funds.
