IL Senate Dems to Dissect GOP Candidate's Budget
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The leaders of two Illinois universities are urging lawmakers not to make further cuts in this year's higher education budget.

They warn that state government is already far behind in providing the money it has promised. The head of the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University say more cuts would require major layoffs, make college more expensive and hurt the economy.

The warnings came Wednesday in a Senate hearing on the impact of across-the-board budget cuts of 10 percent.

The Democratic majority says the hearing was one step in reviewing possible budget cuts and the impact they would have.

They also acknowledge that across-the-board cuts are a favorite idea of the likely Republican candidate for governor, Sen. Bill Brady.
