Dems Start Taking Applications for Lt. Gov
CHICAGO (AP) -- About 70 would-be politicians have applied to be the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in Illinois.

The Democratic Party began accepting applications on its Web site this week. Nearly 50 people applied Tuesday, and another 25 applications were posted online Wednesday.

The applicants include everyone from a former senior adviser to ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich to an out-of-work technician who answered the question "Why are you a Democrat?" with "Who said I was?"

Voters had elected pawnbroker Scott Lee Cohen as the Democratic candidate. He left the race after winning the primary amid revelations about past steroid use and allegations of violence.

Many of the new applicants are political newcomers like Cohen, and several are currently unemployed.
