Cemetery Oversight Committee Holds First Meeting
A new board set up to protect the public from deceptive and unfair practices by cemeteries has met for the first time.

The first meeting of the Illinois Cemetery Oversight Board was held via video conference with board members in Chicago and Springfield.

Board member Roman Szabelski says the board was created after the scandal at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, where bodies were dug up and plots resold. He says consumers must be better informed.

"Trying to educate the public to understand cemeteries and the funeral industry better, I think, is a major thing that needs to be accomplished by this board," Szabelski said.

He says the board is also looking at creating a statewide cemetery database in order to better keep track of plots.

The first meeting was mostly administrative in subject matter with the board setting up administrative rules and dates for future meetings.
