Lawmaker-Sponsored Scholarships May End
You may not be able to count on your favorite state lawmaker to send your child to college much longer. The Illinois House has passed a bill that would end the tuition waiver program. However, the Senate has failed to pass similar bills out of committee and did pass a bill trying to steer the scholarships away from the politically connected.

The bill passed the House by more than a two-to-one margin, after heated debate. Sponsoring Rep. Mark Walker (D-Arlington Heights) said he has not awarded any of the waivers himself, and other lawmakers accused him of denying some of his constituents the opportunity to attend college because of it.

The program, said to be the only one of its kind in the country, has brought a great deal of attention because several of the recipients have been, for example, children of campaign donors. One opponent of the bill, State Rep. Will Davis (D-Homewood), suggested Walker, a freshman, was only thinking of his next election in sponsoring the bill.
