NIU and ISU Talk Higher Education Spending
Presidents of Illinois' public universities are airing their frustrations to a House appropriations committee.

Illinois State University's Al Bowman says the state's financial crisis is bad, with, for example, a water-sprinkler mandate making things worse. "This is legislation only a pipe-fitter could love," said Bowman, adding he could have saved a great deal of money by installing smoke detectors everywhere, and the campus would be no less safe.

Northern Illinois University president John Peters says it's a domino effect: "You get to the point where, if this begins to have an impact, the value of your degree is questioned."

One person who holds a lot of value is NIU's police chief, Donald Grady. State Rep. Rich Myers (R-Colchester) questioned Grady's $198,963 salary. The university's chief operating officer, Eddie Williams, told Myers Grady brings a high standard to the campus police force -- and his expertise probably helped keep the 2008 shootings -- in which five people were killed -- from being worse.
