Corrections Says Budget Cuts Could Damage System
The Departments of Corrections would resort to lock and feed operations if faced with a 10 percent budget cut. Corrections Director Michael Randle testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee Thursday about what the cut would mean for the department.

Randle said money set aside for food, medical services, and payroll would run out by May 2010 if the cuts took place. The department already faces high overtime costs and might have to layoff workers. Randle says that would mean prisoners would be kept on lock down because there would not be enough staff to operate programs.

As the budget stands now, Randle says his feels comfortable with the ratio of staff to prisoners. The department has even been able to implement some cost saving measures for fiscal year 2010, but a cut could bring operations to a standstill.

The cut is part of Senator Bill Brady's proposal to reduce the budget by ten percent across the board.
