City Reaches Accord with Another Union
There's now only essentially one union left covering City of Galesburg Employees without a new contract now that another will be taken up during a special Galesburg City Council meeting Monday night.

Documents provided to aldermen in advance of Monday's meeting indicates the city has reached a deal with its police officers' union, a part of the Public Safety Employees Organization.

The city says police officers will receive three-and-a-quarter percent pay increases each year of a three-year deal, retroactive to January 1st, 2009.

They also say employees will receive a bonus equal to a half-percent of their salary for participation in annual firearms, hazardous materials, and other similar certifications.

Officers will have to pay for part of their health insurance for the first time, similar to an agreement recently approved with the city's firefighters. The city also is establishing health retirement accounts for all new hires after the first of this year that they'll be required to contribute to.

That leaves the lone union without a new deal is the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 1173. That union picketed a City Council meeting in February. The city and AFSCME have been working with a federal mediator.
