| Monmouth Roseville Recommends Immediate School Closures |
The Superintendent of the Monmouth-Roseville School District says he had to figure out what was best for the students, despite the urging of many public members that their school not be the one to close. Paul Woehlke told the Monmouth-Roseville School Board Friday night he wants the board to consider closing Willits Primary School in Monmouth, and Roseville Elementary School, turning Lincoln Intermediate School, Harding Primary School, and the Central Early Childhood Center into grade-based attendance centers. Woehlke based that, in large part, on how much transportation would be needed, and says the moves would eventually save $375,000. Woehlke says nothing was easy for him to recommend. "First and foremost I'm responsible for the eduction of our children, " Woehlke said. "I believe that is the paramount issue that needs to be kept in the forefront as we consider what's before us."
The closures, Woehlke says, would only result in the elimination of one teaching position. But, Woehkle's plan was, in his words, flexible, because more cuts may be needed based on what scenario of state education spending plays out. In the worst case, some programs would need to be cut, athletic participation fees would be implemented, all assistant athletic coaches would be cut, and other things, including possibly even consolidation. The District-238 board will vote on the recommendations Tuesday night. You can see the recommendations by clicking on the link: www.mr238.org/Superintendents%20Deficit%20Elimination%20Page.html. |
