House Again Discusses Ban on BPA
A chemical product that's used in plastic and metal packaging is again being debated at the Capitol. Bisphenol-A, or BPA, is used as a lining in cans and bottles. A bill sponsored by State Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) would outlaw its use in containers that hold, for example, baby formula.

The proposed ban did not pass last year, but it has new life in Illinois because of similar bans already passed in Chicago, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Connecticut. Environmental groups and the chemical industry disagree over the product's safety.

HB 6088 has passed the House Youth and Family Committee.
