Southwestern IL Village Lays Off 18 Workers
CAHOKIA, Ill. (AP) -- A southwestern Illinois village says five police department workers and six workers in either the parks or streets departments are among 18 full-time workers laid off because of a budget crunch.

The job cuts that leave the village with nearly 70 workers were announced Friday in light of a budget shortfall of $971,000 to $1.2 million for the fiscal year ending April 30.

Mayor Frank Bergman says it comes at a time that soaring payroll, pension and workers compensation costs don't square with plunging sales and income tax revenues.

The village's remaining workers will be forced to take one unpaid day off a week, while all seasonal and part-time employees also have been cut.

Bergman says he's considering several municipal fees and tax increases.
