Galesburg Candidates Weigh In On Role of GREDA
The relationship between the city of Galesburg and the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association has been a hot topic as of late.

Candidates for city council last(Tuesday) night at a public forum were asked if they agree with a proposal to change the composition of a committee, that is the main communication line between the two groups, from mostly GREDA members to mainly at large community members.

Ward five candidate Peter SchwartZman said he agrees that the community needs more input.

"I think GREDA does have a role to play. I don't think the role has to be serve as currently 12 out of 15 members, I think that is way disproportionate. I think more members of the community at large, as I was a member at large have a role to play in furthering a positive development of Galesburg."

Incumbent Karen Lafferty says she does not think another city commission is necessary.

"I think we have entered into an agreement with GREDA, we don't need to pay them 75 thousand dollars a year, but we have entered into an agreement and we need to honor that agreement."

Steve Shearer is also running in the fifth ward and says GREDA needs some some sort of accountability.

"I don't think there is any question that all of us in this room would agree that change of some sort needs to be made. The direction it has been in hasn't been good."

The Galesburg city election is April 5th.
