Emanuel Applauds 5 New Chicago Grocery Stores
CHICAGO (AP) --Chicago Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel is applauding a St. Louis-based chain for opening five new grocery stores in neighborhoods identified as food deserts.

Emanuel says the new Save-A-Lot stores that opened Thursday will attract other retailers to the communities on the city's South Side. A food desert is a neighborhood without easy access to a main-stream grocery store. An estimated 600,000 Chicagoans live in food deserts without access to fruits and vegetables.

Emanuel says he is committed to reducing that number. Shoppers at one Save-A-Lot store said they're thrilled to have a new option. Save-A-Lot plans to open five additional stores in the Chicago area by 2012.

Emanuel noted that the stores also created up to 150 new jobs. He attended the grand opening of one of the stores.
