CTBA Says School Money Should Be Much Higher to Produce Results
(IRN)-The amount of money the state spends on educating kids in kindergarten through 12th grade should go up if anybody expects any results. That's according to the head of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, Ralph Martire, who told an Illinois House appropriations committee an advisory board's recommendation of $8,360 in per-pupil spending should be a starting point for discussions.

The actual figure now is $6,416.

Chris Koch, the state superintendent of schools, told the Appropriations Committee for Elementary and Secondary Education about 45 percent of the state's schoolchildren now live in poverty, as determined by the number who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

He told the lawmakers the Illinois State Board of Education has already made numerous cuts, "34 important programs to save $246 million; programs such as textbook loan, reading improvement, summer bridges, and homeless education."

The chairman of the committee, State Rep. Will Davis (D-Homewood), promised the discussions would continue.
