Officials Keeping Watchful Eye on Possible IL Flooding
(IRN)-The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is keeping close tabs on levees as the Ohio River remains far above flood stage at Cairo.

The corps has dispatched additional staff to monitor that situation, as well as the status of levees farther south of the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Emergency field officers at Cape Girardeau, Cairo and Dyersburg, Tenn., are closely monitoring levees, floodwalls and pumping stations.

Steve Rager, the Corps emergency manager for the Louisville District, says he is keeping a close eye on a levee at Brookport, Ill.

"We have no confidence in the levee at this point," Rager said. He says crews are keeping some water on the normally dry side of the levee in order to keep equal pressure and stabilize the levee.

The river stage hit 52.6 feet at Cairo on Monday morning, more than 12 feet above flood stage. The corps expects a prolonged level of 52.5 feet.
