Energy Savings Lower Than Projected, but Unpredictable for District 205
On the surface, it appears the money saved by the Galesburg School District in energy costs for having a month-long winter break isn't nearly as much as was thought.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Joel Estes told the school board Monday night that the district only saved about $27,000 in energy costs during the month long winter break, far lower than the over $100,000 administrators projected.

But Estes says he doubts the figure is accurate.

"There are a lot of variables involved in figuring out energy savings including energy costs, actual temperature over the time periods, and that kind of thing."

And Estes says some other things also weren't taken into account that will happen later on that will save more money.

"That does not include turning boilers off at spring break and leaving them off for the rest of the year and as I said it includes a lot of other variables."

The Galesburg School Board did approve a calendar for the 2011-2012 school year that has a Winter Break of a little more than two weeks but still ends the first semester at the start of winter break.

Estes says, however, the district will likely be in school on Columbus Day once a public hearing can be held on the matter.

School for students next year will start August 16th for students, the 15th for teachers.
