Health Department Hoping to Change Food Permits
The Knox County Health Department is looking to make some changes to food permit standards as the spring and summer season approaches.

Health Protection Services Director Monica Hendrickson says there were some disparities in the department's ordinances when it came to defining seasonal and temporary permits.

"We've had temporary food permits which have always been issued to a single event, so for example Scenic Drive or Galesburg's Taste of Galesburg kind of event. The others have been then a yearly permit so what about the person that sets up a food stand or the baseball stand, where - why are they paying for a yearly permit when they're open for a short amount of time, and at the same time they aren't eligible for a temporary food permit?"

Hendrickson suggested changing ordinance language to a temporary permit would be no longer than seven days, while a seasonal permit would be no longer than 90 days.

Much of the problem stemmed from baseball food stands that Hendrickson mentioned, which are currently exempt in the ordinance but were being inspected on a regular basis anyway.

Hendrickson says now including them in ordinances will ensure the department is receiving payment for services through the permit fees.
