Centers for Independent Living Hope to Avoid Budget Cuts
(IRN) -- There's something unique about Centers for Independent Living -- the people who run them are themselves living with disabilities. Speaking from a wheelchair, which she uses because of polio and post-polio syndrome, Ann Ford says Gov. Pat Quinn is not being true to his own beliefs by trying to make budget cuts on the backs of her clients.

Ford is executive director of the Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living, which convened a statehouse news conference and protest over the cuts. She and others who appeared at the Capitol say the programs involved -- meant to get people with disabilities living independently and self-sufficiently -- are ultimately money-savers.

Cathy Contarino says in 24 years at IMPACT, a center based in Alton, "I've paid a lot of my share of taxes," even though she is unable to walk because of a neuromuscular illness.
