IL Bill Would Require Abortion Facility Upgrades
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Legislation requiring Illinois abortion clinics to meet the same standards as hospital surgical facilities is headed to the House floor.

The bill's backers say more must be done to make sure all clinics that perform abortions are as safe as possible.

Opponents say state health law already covers abortion clinics and recognizes that they are different from full-scale operating rooms.

The American Civil Liberties Union says the state health department ensures that abortion facilities are safe. The group says Illinois would have to spend more money to enforce the proposed legislation.

Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, says if the measure becomes law, clinics will have three years to meet the new standards.

The bill is HB3156.
