Smoke-Free Illinois Considerations at Knox County Health Department
The Knox County Health Department is considering a change in order to better enforce the Smoke Free Illinois Law.

Health Protection Services Director Monica Hendrickson says they are looking at other examples before making any decisions.

"Just recently -- in February -- the Henry County [and Stark County Health Departments], out of Kewanee, they actually successfully brought legal action to a food establishment that had a smoking citation against them," Hendrickson said. "The way it's worked within Henry County, it's actually attached to their food ordinance -- their permitting, and how they do permitting."

Hendrickson adds that the department isn't in any hurry.

"It might not be a change right now," said Hendrickson. "It might just be something where we have to assess if we have any establishment that chronically violates -- what we want to do specifically for them."

Currently, if a business violates the law, the department gives then a written warning and passes the information along to law enforcement.
