Higher Numbers at Mary Davis Home Good -- In a Sense
The Mary Davis Home in Knox County has been running on a deficit budget for the last year, but things might be turning around.

Discussion during Tuesday night's Knox County Board Finance Committee meeting turned to the recently high levels of juveniles being housed at the facility.

Committee chairman Wayne Saline says kids coming in from out of county means more revenue for the home.

"[The home was] clear full," Saline said. "Most of [the inmates] were out-of-county kids, which means we're going to get paid for them, except for Henry County kids, because [Henry County] paid up front."

Saline adds that is positive news for the home, but no guarantee.

"If the trend were to continue the way it has the last month, the Mary Davis Home will break even at the end of the year," Saline said. "Don't hold your breath that it's going to continue; it's all up to the judges and the whole works, and whether we're going to keep getting money from the State. But, recently, it's looked a lot better out there."

More juveniles have been sent to the Mary Davis Home recently, apparently because a new Knox County Juvenile Judge is taking a stand on what type of behavior will be permitted by young people and what won't.
