U of I Board Looking to Be More Invested in Business Climate
(IRN)-The chairman of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees says universities here aren’t involved enough with business leaders and politicians.

Chairman Chris Kennedy says the business community and politicians should work together to support major research institutions, but they don't. In fact, he says it's unlikely that the state's business bigwigs even know the names of the presidents of Northwestern, the U. of I. and the University of Chicago.

"Even if we could name them, we probably haven't received a call or opened an invitation from them to attend an event for Dick Durbin or Mark Kirk," he said in a speech to the City Club of Chicago. "They are not pushing the business leaders to become engaged in the political process or to try to improve funding for their research institutions in the state."

Kennedy says the iron his hot now, with an Illinoisan in the White House and as the No. 2 man in the U.S. Senate, and the state's research institutions must take advantage of this. He says these institutions have great commercial value, producing the people who create businesses and employ people.
