Orpheum Goes Before City Council Monday Night
The City of Galesburg originally promised to give the Orpheum Theatre $100,000 for major upgrades if a federal grant application was successful. But now, the Orpheum wants the city to pay up anyway.

The Galesburg City Council Monday is being asked to consider giving the Orpheum the money from the Tax Increment Financing District the theatre is in, as part of a redevelopers agreement.

The Theatre tried twice to apply for a federal economic stimulus-based grant that would have been used toward almost $1 million in heating, air conditioning, security, and other upgrades at the theatre.

City officials say now the Orpheum is asking for restrictions on the funding to be removed. The money, they say, is included in this year's budget.

The City Council Monday will also consider on final reading Mayor Sal Garza's request to overhaul the Business District Development and Redevelopment Commission, will have a public hearing on the matter beforehand, and they'll consider an agreement putting firm Bruner, Cooper, and Zuck as an inspector on the upcoming West Main Street Overpass Project.

Aldermen will meet at 6:15pm Monday -- starting with the public hearing -- at City Hall.
