Study Shows Bridges in Illinois are Deteriorating
CHICAGO (AP) -- A new report shows that scores of bridges throughout Illinois are deteriorating to some extent and that 8.5 percent of them are rated ``structurally deficient.''

The Transportation for America advocacy group is releasing a study of the state's bridges on Tuesday. The study also shows that more than 60 percent of all bridges will be past their useful life in 29 years.

The group says that without more federal funding, Illinois will need hundreds of dollars from each driver in the state to fix all the structurally deficient bridges.

Four years ago, after a bridge collapse in Minneapolis killed 13 people, The Associated Press reviewed state records in Illinois. That review determined that more than 1,500 bridges in the state had worse structural ratings than the bridge that collapsed.
