City Ordinance Change Regarding Garages Remains For Now
A residential accessory structure, like a garage or shed, can be no larger than 1000 square feet in the city of Galesburg, by ordinance.

Some city alderman were hoping to change that so garages could be larger.

City staff had recommended the ordinance change back to allowing a structure that could cover as much as 30 percent of a property's rear yard.

City Manager Todd Thompson, however, says it might be better to hold off on the change.

"The original change was based on several complaints," Thompson said. "Staff recognizes there may be some middle ground between the two, and would be certainly open to offer additional suggestions."

"This is a work in process," Mayor Sal Garza said.

Thompson says the ordinance was changed just last year and the city's Planning and Zoning Commission wanted to allow more time for people to become accustomed to the new law.

A person wanting a larger garage, under ordinance, may request one through an appeals process, and no one has even tried it yet.

The council unanimously voted against the change and city staff was instructed to study the matter further.
