Illinois Marks Medal of Honor Day
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- This year is the fourth anniversary of National Medal of Honor day in the United States.

The day has been marked on March 25 since 2007. The Illinois National Guard says that President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill in 1862 creating the military honor and he called it the Medal of Honor.

Illinois has had dozens of Medal of Honor recipients dating back to the Civil War.

One example is World War I veteran Johannes Anderson, who joined the Illinois National Guard from Chicago. The guard says he went under hostile fire to take down a machine gun nest in France.

Anderson's medal is on display at the Illinois State Military Museum in Springfield.
