U of I Wrongly Warns Students of Campus Shooter
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- The University of Illinois says it mistakenly sent a campus-wide warning that someone with a gun was loose on campus.

The university sent the alert about 10:40 a.m. Thursday to thousands of students, parents and others signed up for the Illini Alert message system. The alert warned of an ``active shooter'' and advised anyone nearby to escape. The warning didn't include a location but did include what appeared to be a spot to enter that information into the message.

About 15 minutes later the university said it was a mistake. An explanatory e-mail sent later said a worker updating a template in the system accidentally sent the message out rather than saving it.

The university is on spring break this week so most students and faculty were not on campus.
