In-town Field Trips planned for Galesburg Students
Field trips are getting costly for local school districts -- especially with the cost of gas going up. But officials with two organizations say that's not the only reason they're encouraging school districts to take field trips without ever leaving town.

The Discovery Depot Childrens Museum and the Galesburg Railroad Museum have come up with a program called "Discover Galesburg", which is allowing grade school students to take tours of several locations in town, avoiding transportation costs through donations.

Railroad Museum president Jim Clayton tells W-G-I-L "Discover Galesburg" starts with a trip involving Silas Willard Elementary School Students.

"It's one of the biggest schools in Galesburg and that's going to be our test run right there. I think they have like 70 kids, and we are going to start out with the fourth grade. And we'll have them from about nine thirty to one at the Discovery Depot and the Carl Sandburg Birthplace and museum."

Organizers say the Discover Galesburg program isn't just about saving school districts money on gas. It's also about getting students more interested an active in their community.

The Silas Willard 4th Grade Trip is scheduled to happen in April.
