Lawmakers Again Debating BPA Ban
(IRN)-The battle over baby bottles is rising again in the Illinois House of Representatives. Attempts to ban bottles made with the chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) have failed in past years, but there is a new attempt targeting the containers of baby formula used in the state's Women, Infants and Children nutrition program.

Celeste Meiffren, field director for the Illinois Public Interest Research Group, says parents are learning about the problem and are demanding change, but they should not have to become scientists to know how to get the safest products for their children.

State Representative Lisa Hernandez (D-Cicero), sponsor of a bill to ban baby formula containers which include BPA from the state's WIC program, says research ties exposure to BPA in infancy with such health problems as cancer, diabetes, and developmental disabilities.

Representatives of the chemical and packaging industries say BPA is perfectly safe and that the alternatives have not even been tested. The bill stalled on a tie vote in committee, but the chair said it would get another chance this spring.

HB 3467 is in the House Environmental Health Committee.
