Early Childhood Education Advocates Hope for More Funding
(IRN)-State lawmakers trying to figure out how to divide education money are getting a reminder not to forget the little ones. Participants and other advocates in early childhood education made their case to an appropriations committee in the Illinois House.

Sessy Nyman, vice president of Illinois Action for Children, says programs such as Preschool for All hit the bull’s eye, saying the concept is to find where needy children are and reach them, as opposed to "build it, and they will come."

Bev Cicolello is an early childhood teacher in Rockford, where she says the public schools have a reputation for being a leader in this field: "As recently as 2008, 100 percent of our former early childhood students graduated from high school, while the rest of the Rockford district high school dropout rate was 14 percent."

Speaking of dropping out, another advocate, Sean Noble of Voices for Illinois Children, said kids start doing so mentally many years before they are able to drop out physically.
