World Trade Center Steel Used for IL Memorial
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- A memorial to emergency responders with pieces of steel from the World Trade Center will be built in northern Illinois.

The Winnebago County 9/11 Emergency Responders Memorial will be constructed in Rockford.

The Rockford Register Star reports the memorial will have sculptures of a police officer, firefighter and emergency medical technician. It will also have two 20-foot towers with dozens of trees planted nearby.

A ceremony was held Saturday in Rockford to unveil the steel.
Rockford Fire Department Lt. Will Pederson says the memorial is a symbol of sacrifice.
Pederson is chair of the committee overseeing the memorial. The group is working to raise more than $911,000 by the 10-year anniversary of the attacks.
