Durbin: Now is Time To Decide on Flood Insurance
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Dick Durbin is urging Illinoisans who live in areas prone to flooding to decide -- and decide quickly -- whether they should get flood insurance.

In a news release, the Illinois Democrat says with experts warning that there may be heavy flooding in some parts of the state, residents should look into whether they should purchase insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.

Durbin says the owners of property in moderate or low risk flood zones and properties where the flood map isn't final, insurance can cost as little as $129 a year and in flood zones, coverage can be purchased for an average of just over $1,000 to $1,500 a year.

But he says they have to purchase the insurance 30 days before any flooding damage.
