Millions of Dollars in Renovations Planned by Knoxville Schools
The Knoxville School District is setting its sights on what could be millions of dollars in improvements to district buildings that could be made in the next several years.

Superintendent Stephen Wilder outlined the work to the District-202 Board Monday night. Several hundred thousand dollars in work is being planned over the next two years to both Mabel Woolsey and Knoxville Junior High Schools, which could increase if an Energy Efficiency Grant is approved.

But the big work could come in the next couple of years in the form of an addition at Knoxville High School, which Wilder says would be paid for with proceeds with its share of the one-percent increase in the Knox County sales tax, but another step needs to be taken first.

"We can put the district in a position to be ready with a project by hiring an architectural/engineering firm, or a combination of architecture and engineering firms, to begin assisting us in developing the design and the plan for the addition," Wilder said. "After reviewing the numbers, I believe that a new school is probably not a possibility just due to the cost."

The public was told prior to the November election that sales tax proceeds could help build a new all-weather track at the high school. And Wilder says it still could, but fundraising opportunities continue to be sought first.

The District-202 Board Monday night did vote to seek requests for proposals for architects.
