Firms Approved for Master Facilities Plan
A number of pieces of the puzzle that is the first phase of the Galesburg School District's Master Facilities Plan have officially been put into place.

The District 205 Board, at a special meeting Tuesday night, voted to accept the hirings of PSA Dewberry of Peoria as architect of the first $30 million of the plan, Davenport's Russell Construction as architect, and the issuance of the first $30 million worth of bonds with the setting of interest rates.

But the board also voted to change some of its investment policy that essentially allows the district to buy its own bonds, and like parts of the Master Facilities Plan, board member Robert Lindstrom doesn't like this either.

"I read these statutes and I don't see it cited here that gives us the authority to do this, it must be some place if somebody bought some bonds but I don't think these statues do it and the Municipal Funds Act doesn't appear to me to apply to school districts."

District Assistant Superintendent Guy Cahill says it was proven that the practice is legal during a February board meeting. He says it won't happen any time soon, but the district wanted to have flexibility to that end.

The board last night, as part of an annual event, voted to release 42 mostly support staff employees due to uncertain grant funding, with the understanding that with a couple exceptions, most likely will be rehired.

The contracts of several district administrators including Cahill were also extended.
