IL bill Would Require Open Meetings Training
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Some Illinois public officials may have to prove they understand the state's Open Meetings Act.

The Illinois House voted 67-48 Wednesday to require people serving on public boards to pass a training course on the law regulating access to meetings.

It would apply to members of school boards, parks districts and township boards, among others.

Supporters say officials sometimes unknowingly close meetings when the law says they should remain open to the public.

Opponents call it another layer of regulation that could deter people from running for office. They say this is especially troubling in rural areas where there may be few people willing to serve.
