More Corn for Illinois This Year
(IRN)-Illinois farmers are expected to plant a little more corn this year.

They intend to plant 12.8 million acres this year, up from 12.6 million acres last year, according to the USDA.

The main factor in a farmer's decision on what to plant is the market, but Rod Weinzierl of the Illinois Corn Growers Association says individual farmers have specific concerns, such as crop rotation, disease concerns, and how ready their fields are for planting.

Weinzierl says spring weather will affect the actual results of what is planted. If the weather is warm and dry, farmers might plant more corn, but if cold, wet weather delays planting until June, they'll switch to soybeans.

Soybean planting is projected to hold steady at 9.1 million acres in Illinois.

Nationally, corn planting intentions are 92.2 million acres, up 5 percent from last year. Soybean intentions are 76.6 million acres, down 1 percent. Illinois is the No. 2 state behind Iowa for both corn and soybean planting intentions.
