Quinn Refuses 'Radical, Severe' School Cuts
MOKENA, Ill. (AP) -- Governor Pat Quinn refuses to make ``radical, severe'' education cuts that he says might be required by the budget being considered by the Illinois House.

Speaker Michael Madigan and Republican Leader Tom Cross are backing a plan that would mean at least $200 million less for education. Quinn proposed a budget that increased education funding by $225 million.

Quinn told reporters Thursday that cutting school funding would be the wrong way to go.
He says the state needs a ``very lean and frugal'' budget but Illinois can't forget about education, public safety and health care.

This year lawmakers are taking the lead in crafting the state budget rather than letting Quinn decide how to spend the money like they have in the past.
