Child Safety Recalls Up, But Not Alarm
(IRN)--Recalls are up among children's products, but safety advocates are less alarmed than you would think.

The group Kids in Danger is out with its annual report on recalls, of which there were 160 on children's products last year for a total of 44 million units.

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) says this is because a law to beef up to Consumer Product Safety Commission is bearing fruit. "This year [2010], we began to see the implementation and tangible results of the safety provisions that I wrote along with Kids in Danger and other advocates into the 2008 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act," she said.

Schakowsky says the commission has more staff and a more aggressive attitude to issue recalls on dangerous products -- meaning its likely that products weren't more dangerous, but that existing dangerous products were detected and dealt with.

Big recalls announced last year were of failure-prone drop-side cribs, and McDonald’s glasses -- 12 million units-- that were tainted with cadmium.
