Commission Change Discussed During City Council Meeting
Galesburg City Council members Monday night discussed a proposal to re-structure the Business District Development and Redevelopment Commission.

Currently the commission is made of 15 members, mostly representatives from the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association, but Mayor Sal Garza hopes to change to an 8 member commission with only one GREDA representative.

The measure was only on its first reading, but Fifth Ward Alderman Karen Lafferty expressed concern over the change up.

"I think that the Galesburg City Council should go ahead and enter into and honor the agreement that was made in 2003 with GREDA," Lafferty said. "If the mayor wants to appoint a commission, that's his privilege. I don't really think that the public will know more about what's going on with the Logistics Park than they do right now. We don't seem to have anybody beating our door down trying to get out there."

Lafferty also thought the commission should have an odd number of members to prevent tie votes.

GREDA distributed written testimony to council members about their desire to continue to work with the city in good faith, and presented a resolution to members outlining their goals and objectives and commitment to provide a private pathway for confidential inquiries on behalf of existing and potentially new investors and developers, among other things.
