Gun Supports Descend on Springfield
(IRN)-It's a day to celebrate the rights of Illinois gun owners, and seek out more. The Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day in Springfield Thursday included a lot of talk in favor of a bill, which has advanced to the House floor, allowing Illinoisans to carry a concealed weapon; and against the idea of making public the names of people who hold a Firearm Owners ID card.

Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, says "concealed carry," currently allowed in all states but Illinois and Wisconsin, "is about safety: Women and elderly people have the most problem defending themselves, and giving them the right to carry a firearm is the way that they can defend themselves."

The state's attitude toward women is troubling to members of Second Amendment Sisters. Valinda Rowe, an organizer of the lobby day and spokeswoman for IllinoisCarry.com, says the state's official advice on its web sites is for women to carry a key or comb to defend themselves.
