Transportation Continues for Abingdon Pre-K Program
The Abingdon School District is essentially trying to avoid a repeat of last year with a move made Wednesday night to its pre-Kindergarten program.

The District-217 Board voted to fund the around $8,000 needed to provide transportation for pre-K students next school year if grant funding doesn't come through. This school year, grant funding wasn't known until after school started, so transportation wasn't provided until a month into the program.

Superintendent Tami Roskamp says part of the problem is that the process for the grant has become competitive instead of guaranteed. But Board member Sherry Lomax says, essentially, so what?

"We transport the rest of our kids, why would these kids be any different?"

Board president Jim Bloomberg was the lone "no" vote on the proposal, but did not explain his reason why. Screenings through Galesburg's Bright Futures Program are ongoing for potential kids eligible for Abingdon's pre-kindergarten program.

The District-217 board last night also learned that most of the athletic contests cancelled next season due to budget cuts have mostly been restored, with the exception of spring sports, which will be dealt with later.

Money for the games was donated by the Abingdon Athletic Boosters.
