Utility's Rate Boost Request Opposed by Some
CHICAGO (AP) -- A battle has erupted over the rate increase request Commonwealth Edison has made to the Illinois Commerce Commission.

The elderly and unemployed showed up at an ICC hearing on Thursday asking regulators to reject a rate increase and a pilot surcharge. Together, they would add $5.25 to an average resident's monthly bill of $86.

Mia Lopez, who is unemployed, says her pocketbook is stretched to its limit every month, noting bills increase while her income does not.

Officials of the Citizens Utility Board and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office also testified against the rate increase. They said they consider ComEd's request ill-timed and unsupportable.

ComEd has indicated it is seeking the money to pay for $2 billion the utility invested in maintaining and upgrading its electrical distribution system.
