Contracts and School Closures May be Needed in District 205
The Galesburg School District may want to do two things likely to cause controversy and anger in order to solve about a million dollar hole in the district's budget if the state doesn't fully fund schools as promised.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill says an as-yet unidentified elementary school may have to close as soon as 2014 if the state doesn't fulfill its obligations, which put the district over 800-thousand dollars in the hole now, and could increase to a million dollars.

Cahill says closing an elementary school can't be done any sooner.

"We need to seriously look and really provide time for the stakeholder groups that would be impacted by realigning our elementary buildings," Cahill said.

District-205 Superintendent Gene Denisar says he wouldn't want to name what school just yet, but he says there's only one reason why this is being thought about.

"The state's not funding education, period," Denisar said at Thursday's budget committee meeting.

More immediately, the district wants to re-open the contract with its teachers union to look at eliminating the block schedule at Galesburg High School, and implementing more online courses. Those are the sort of things the Galesburg Education Association may not want to do, especially since their contract was just signed a few months ago.
