City Tries Out New Recycling Initiative
The City of Galesburg is trying something different with its recycling program, and it's something that officials hope residents are willing to switch to.

City Associate Planner Julie Main says the city is working with Waste Management to try out a wheeled cart system for curbside recycling. Residents currently use 18 gallon tubs for recycling. Now, Main says, around 550 households in town will try out 96 gallon roll-away bins.

Main tells the WGIL Morning News if you're in the area Waste Management has selected, you should be getting your recycling bin soon.

"The test area that they selcted is bounded by North Broad St. on the west. North Street on the south, Park Lane Ave. on the north, and Prairie St. on the east," she said. "This wheeled cart is going to have a yellow lid, so you'll be able to dinstinguish it differently because some residents do currently rent the 96 gallon cars for their garbage."

Main says the households were selected based on above-average participation in the curbside recycling program. All recyclables will be able to put in the same container.

She says she hopes it shows the participation would be there for a switch city-wide. If this works, Main says the city council will be a part of a work session on the matter in the summer, and then bids would be solicited.
