Two Steps Forward in Bid for New Library in Galesburg
Plans for a new Galesburg Public Library caught momentum Thursday as the board took two significant steps in the process.

Board Treasurer Mike Kroll with Step One:

"Barry Barash will act as 'Pro Bono' as the library's representative for the purpose of this land acquisition."

Barash is a local attorney who, last week, offered his legal services free of charge.

The second benchmark reached by the board Thursday was approving $50,000 for environmental inspections at the targeted West Main Street properties.

Kroll tells WGIL the preliminary engineering work will begin right away this spring.

"Some of it will involve paperwork, which can be started much earlier," Kroll said. "But if we get to the point where we need to do geo-technical analysis, looking for contanimated soil or unsuitable compaction, those types of things, we want to wait until the weather warns up (and) makes it a little neater for the drilling rigs."

According to Kroll, this type of work will determine whether or not the library wants to even involve themselves with the property anymore.

He expects the assessments, design revisions, and, ultimately, the land acquisitions, to take up to a year.
