| Area Girl Scouts Celebrate 100 Years |
Area girl scouts and supporters paid homage to the organizations's 100th Anniversary Monday night with music and a promise circle at the center of Sandburg Mall. One hundred total people joined hands to form the friendship circle, and millions of others were holding hands across the country to honor Juliette Low's founding of the troops one hundred years earlier. Knox Country Service Unit Director Lora Wright says planning for Monday night's event began a year ago. She tells WGIL it was a moment her girl scouts will remember.
"When we started talking about the 100th anniversary, and I told them the next time an anniversary comes around it will be the 200th anniversary, and their granddaughters or great-granddaughters will be celebrating it as girls," she said. "And then they were like, 'Oh wow it has been a long time.'"
Wright says too volunteers have been communicating to the girl scouts how much the times have changed over the last one hundred years. She says this includes pictures and movies to show the evolution in women's rights, the rise in technology, and also the abundance of other resources now available. Wright says it's fantastic that so many people came out to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the girl scouts.
