City Finds Money for Beach and Brush
Lake Storey Beach in Galesburg will remain open, as will the city's oversized brush drop-off program -- for now.

City Manager Todd Thompson confirms that following requests from aldermen, the programs are safe from closure despite a recommendation to that end aldermen approved in the city's budget.

Thompson tells WGIL money from the city's contingency fund will be used for those purposes, and that's okay with him.

"The contingency is available for unanticipated expenses, or change of plans, so to speak, so it's an appropriate use of the funding."

Thompson says the city's contingency fund is doing just fine right now.

"Funding in the contingency line item this year is efficient, were about a quarter of the way in the year and haven't identified any unanticipated expenses to date," Thompson said. "So I'm comfortable there's sufficient funding there."

The city had been concerned with continued use of the beach because of ongoing concerns about e.coli in the water due to the geese population there.

Aldermen had suggested that some of the hours of operation at the beach be expanded, and Thompson says he's looking into that.
