Land Manager Disputes Soil Claim
The company that developed the Seminary Square Shopping Center says there's nothing wrong with the land, and disputes the city's claim that there's anything wrong with it.

Horne Properties Development Manager Michael Patterson says he highly doubts the City of Galesburg's assertion that Kohl's pushed off its groundbreaking and opening until 2013 because of softer soil than normal.

Patterson tells WGIL he thinks the economy is really to blame.

"I don't think the economy has rebounded as quickly as maybe the news media across the country is reporting," Patterson said. "And so these retailers are becoming more conservative. They're opening stores that are smaller, (and) they're opening fewer stores."

Patterson says he can't speak for Kohl's, but he thinks that's the case here because when Horne purchased the land over six years ago, a battery of soil quality tests all were favorable.

For its part, Kohl's responded to an e-mail from WGIL Thursday, saying it couldn't even confirm it was opening up a store in Galesburg, and doesn't comment on real estate speculation.

The City announced that a Kohl's would be opening up in Galesburg last June.
